Mounties in Vernon now equipped with body cams

May 12, 2025 | 4:59 PM

Police in the City of Vernon are now equipped with body-worn cameras.

A presentation to Vernon Council stated officers in the city had been trained on how to use the cameras and were equipped with the devices as of Monday, May 12.

The officers will be wearing the cams as part of their everyday uniform and have been instructed to turn them on as they exit their vehicles to respond to calls, interact with the public, or patrol Vernon.

“The most important thing is to make the process of bringing forward evidence easier, that’s really what’s critical for police, as it provides clear information,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters following Monday’s meeting.

“For the public, they know fully that the behaviour of the police is now being recorded.”

Cumming added the cameras come with a “significant expensive” that is primarily bore by the city, but still considered having the items in use as a “win-win.”

It was noted there will be some times that cameras will be turned off, such as in areas where privacy is paramount, but they will be on the majority of time to improve transparency and increase evidence collection capabilities.

Council also heard the cameras will replace the digital cameras and recorders police previously used.

Vernon Council learned of the body cameras being equipped as part of the quarterly crime update Monday.
