‘High collision’ intersection in West Kelowna needs $4M fix

May 12, 2025 | 1:31 PM

Big changes could be coming to one of West Kelowna’s busiest and most troublesome intersections.

A $4.35 million upgrade has been put forward for Old Okanagan Highway and Butt Road, adding turn lanes, bike lanes, proper sidewalks, and better drainage.

Construction could start as early as the end of May and is expected to finish in the fall of 2025.

City council would need to approve the project and a report from staff noted the intersection is the only signalized intersection in West Kelowna under the City of West Kelowna’s (the City) jurisdiction.

It is associated with the highest collision cost of all intersections in the City.

In total, the enhanced intersection would include:

  • Additional left turn lanes in all directions with permissive left turns.
  • One additional right turn lane westbound on Butt Road.
  • 350m of new concrete sidewalk (replacing 95m of asphalt path).
  • 640m of dedicated bike lanes.
  • 174m of new watermain to replace aging pipe.
  • Drainage improvements
