BC Wildfire Service closely monitoring Washington state blaze

A heavy blanket of smoke descended on Oliver and Osoyoos late Wednesday, as shifting winds carried haze north from a wildfire burning just across the Washington State border.

The Wannacut Fire, which has grown to approximately 40 hectares, remains on the U.S. side, but its proximity to Canada is raising concerns. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire has not crossed the border, though Canadian aircraft were deployed Wednesday to assist American crews with suppression efforts.

While conditions remain dynamic, no new firefighting crews or equipment are being dispatched at this time.

“We’re monitoring the situation closely, but no additional resources are being sent today,” said BC Wildfire Service spokesperson Cali Messman. “Our teams remain in contact with U.S. counterparts and are prepared to respond if the fire’s status changes.”

The fire’s smoke plume has stretched northward due to strong winds, leading to hazy skies and a noticeable drop in air quality across the region. During significant wildfires residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities and check Environment Canada updates for the latest health advisories.

Officials say the decision to withhold additional resources for now is based on current containment progress and weather models. However, Messman emphasized the situation remains fluid. The BC Wildfire Service continues to coordinate with U.S. agencies and will reassess its response as needed in the coming days.
