Power outage didn’t put a damper on Comic Con

The annual convention for comics, games and all things geeky was not hindered by a power outage.

The Vernon Comic Con ran out of the Vernon Recreation Centre and the Vernon Curling Club Saturday, May 3, and featured vendors, activities, photo opportunities and games.

Peter Kaz, the organizer of the Vernon Comic Con, said the event went well despite a power outage at 11 a.m., about an hour after the doors had opened.

“Apparently a goose landed on a transformer and we had a power failure for about an hour,” Kaz told Vernon Matters in an email.

“That hour was pretty stressful, not knowing if the event would have to be canceled. Simply spent the time, keeping people out of the building was my number one priority keeping everybody safe. Power came back an hour later.”

He noted people who had to wait out of the venues “seemed to be in great spirits,” adding there were food trucks and entertainers outside to keep people occupied until power was restored.

Kaz had planned to run the Comic Con an hour longer than they had in past years, and said that helped ensure it was “just as busy as last year,” though did not provide details on how many people actually came through the doors.

“Definitely felt the love from everyone who attended and all the guests and all the vendors,” KAz added.

“Everyone there had a wonderful time. Power failure is what it is nothing we can do about it, except stay in good spirits, and wait it out with like-minded people. I love this town and that’s why I do what I do.”
