Vernon Search and Rescue find missing campers near Mable Lake

Apr 29, 2025 | 10:39 AM

Two campers who went missing near Mable Lake were found in the early hours Monday morning.

Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) was dispatched to search for two people from Salmon Arm who had planned to camp near the north end of the lake, but had not come home when expected.

The campers’ family had searched for them Sunday, April 27, and then called 911 for help. At 10:30 p.m., VSAR, with assistance from Revelstoke Search and Rescue, went out into the area to search for the missing pair.

At around 2:30 a.m., the campers were found, cold but in good condition. They had been walking out in the mountains, but their truck broke down in an area with no cell coverage.

VSAR reminded people exploring the backcountry to leave an itinerary of their plans with their family or friends, and carry a satellite communication device into areas with little or no cell coverage. The agency also said people should report missing people to VSAR and other search and rescue groups sooner rather than later.
