Two Kelowna area ridings split on election night: Video

The spoils of the federal election were shared on either side of Okanagan Lake with very contrasting results.

In Kelowna there was a remarkably close encounter that saw Liberal Stephen Fuhr defeat incumbent Tracy Gray by the narrowest of margins.

Meanwhile Conservative Dan Albas won relatively comfortably over Liberal Juliette Warwick Sears.

Fuhr secures narrow victory over Gray in Kelowna

In Kelowna, former Liberal MP Fuhr held a lead of over a thousand votes over Gray for most of the night before things narrowed to as little at 66 votes at one stage. With one polling station to report at around 1 a.m. Tuesday , he had a 170 voted lead with 47.7 per cent of the vote to Gray’s 47.2 per cent.

He told supporters just before 11 p.m. that he figured a recount was likely regardless of the final outcome. He added he had excellent cross-party support across the riding.

“Support from all the parties is what it takes to beat the Conservatives in a riding like this. Progressive parties and progressive candidates can win in Kelowna. This is not a Conservative lock anymore,” he said.

Albas eases to win on Okanagan Lake West-South Kelowna

Meanwhile Conservative Dan Albas secured yet another win in the Okanagan Lake West-South Kelowna riding.

With around a dozen stations yet to report he had over 52 per cent of the vote to see off Liberal challenger Juliette Sicotte. His lead at 1 a.m. was around 5,000 votes.

Albas has won five straight federal elections dating back to 2011.
