Canadians get ‘extremely strong Conservative opposition’ : Dan Albas

The Conservative Party can be proud of their showing in the federal election, especially when some were predicting a Liberal super majority just a few weeks ago.

That’s the reaction from Dan Albas, who won the Okanagan Lake West- South Okanagan riding Monday night to record his fifth successive election victory dating back to 2011.

Albas said there may be opportunities to work with what looks like a new minority Liberal government but he said he has doubts about leader Mark Carney’s approach to serious public safety and seniors affordability concerns.

He congratulated Carney on what he called the Liberal’s limited mandate adding they did not get given a full and long leash by the Canadian people, while the electorate has chosen an extremely strong Conservative opposition.

“What that means for the people of the Okanagan is that I will continue to hold Mr. Carney accountable for promises [such as] getting more young people into housing,” Albas said. “There may be opportunities to work together to reduce the tax burden. Young people just don’t believe that they’ll ever be able to own a home.”

He continued to criticize the Liberal’s position on what he called their ‘catch and release’ criminal justice system with too many violent offenders allowed back into the community and the plight of seniors who have to struggle between ‘heating and eating.’

“Whether it’s a Conservative or Liberal government all of us in the Okanagan want to see good things happen so I’ll be looking for those issues that we can work together on,” he said.
