Vernon’s bylaw officers responded to 895 calls for service in the downtown core last year.

A report to Vernon City Council said, of those calls, 439 of them, or 49 per cent, involved the unhoused population. Those complaints ranged from drug use to temporary shelters, and from mental health to panhandling.

The report said 641, or 72 per cent of the downtown files, also occurred within an area of downtown west of 32nd Street. In addition to homelessness concerns, the files in that area were primarily related to traffic, sign, business licencing, fire services, and parks and public places bylaws.

The key concerns raised in the bylaw files related to public safety, and the report to council said work was ongoing in Vernon to address those through proactive patrols with the RCMP, the Folks on Spokes outreach program, and educational and awareness training opportunities.
