A respiratory illness outbreak has been declared at a long term care facility in Vernon.

Interior Health said a Rhinovirus/Enterovirus outbreak was identified at Heron Grove long term care’s Cottage 6 Tuesday, April 15.

Rhinovirus and enteroviruses cause cold-like symptoms including fever, coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches, and mild body aches.

More severe illnesses can result in asthma attacks, sinus and/or ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Under the outbreak status, the facility implemented measures to reduce the risk of further spread including cancelling outings and activities, increased use of personal protective equipment, rescheduling non-emergency medical appointments, and enhanced cleaning.
