Construction Progress Update

ALC construction on time and on budget, though may be affected by tariffs

Construction of Vernon’s new Active Living Centre has been moving along steadily so far.

Speaking with Vernon Matters, Mayor Victor Cumming provided an update on the progress made at the major recreation hub project.

“Generally, we are between the fence posts still. We’ve got it well underway, if people want to go by and have a look,” Cumming said.

“The beams are up over the pool area, some stairway towers and a number of other things are all in place. A lot of foundation work is in place, but you’d have to have a bird’s eye view to see that, and it’s basically within timing and within budget.”

However, with approximately a year and a half to complete the ALC, the mayor did say trade threats from the United States do pose a risk to the project.

“Everyone’s aware that there’s some conversation going on about the word tariffs, and that may impact some of the final purchasing that we have to do,” Cumming told Vernon Matters.

“A fair bit of the equipment we’ve already purchased, that has already been delivered, came from the U.S. So there’s chunks of stuff left over that we are aware that might be caught if we end up with suppliers that have sourced from the U.S. and the tariffs have gone on.

“At this point we’re in good shape, and are looking at this as possible future risks in the last round of purchases.”

The next official city update on the project will be given in the fall.

The City of Vernon had previously set the completion and opening of the ALC for the fall of 2026.
