Death stats decline in North, Central Okanagan

The preliminary number of deaths in the North and Central Okanagan show declines on a quarterly and annual bases.

Vital Statistics, B.C.’s data tracking agency, reported a total of 247 deaths in the North Okanagan between January 1 and March 31, 2025. That was down from the 279 deaths recorded between October 1 and December 1 of the year before.

The provincial agency’s report only offers statistical figures and does not provide information about the causes of deaths, or differentiate between accidental, natural or other.

The Vernon Centre/Coldstream and the Enderby health areas reported declines in deaths on a quarterly basis, offsetting increases in North Okanagan/Lumby and Armstrong/Spallumcheen.

The death total was also down on an annual basis, as the first quarter of 2024 saw 304 deaths in the region

The Central Okanagan also reported a decline in deaths, as there were a total of 557 in Q1 2025 compared to 559 in Q4 2024. There were increased deaths in the Downtown Kelowna, Okanagan Mission and West Kelowna areas, but those were offset from declines elsewhere in the region.

Vital Statistics data also showed the death total was down on an annual basis as Q1 of 2024 saw a total of 582 deaths in the Central Okanagan.

Meanwhile, a total of 10,743 deaths were recorded throughout B.C. in Q1 of 2025. That was down from 2024’s Q4 total of 11,257 deaths, and was also down from the 11,648 deaths recorded throughout B.C. in the first three months of 2024.

The figures provided were preliminary and subject to change.
