Apr 8, 2025 | 10:16 AM

— Update —

Highway 1 west of Sorrento was no longer washed out as of the late-morning.

DriveBC updated it’s website and removed the washout notification that had been put in place earlier Tuesday, April 8.

The affected section of the highway, located between Sorrento and the Squilax Bridge that leads to the communities on the north side of Shuswap lake.

The Ministry of Transportation said the washout occurred after a creek overtopped its channel and water flowed across the highway.

The highway was closed temporarily but opened later in the morning with reduced speed limit.

The province said crews were on site as of noon working to redirect the flow back into the channel and clean up the roadway.

The highway between Sorrento and the turnoff to north side of Shuswap Lake was washed out Tuesday morning.

DriveBC reported the washout on Highway 1 east of Squilaz-Anglemont Road and the Squilax Bridge April 8, which crosses Chum Creek and grants access to several communities including Scotch Creek, Lee Creek and Anglemont.

DriveBC said the highway was open, but with a reduced speed limit. It advised people be cautious travelling on the highway.

Motorists were urged to use the alternate rout of Highway 97 to Highway 97A/B to avoid the area.

Vernon Matters contacted the Ministry of Transportation to learn more about the washout and what was being done to address it, but the province did not have an immediate comment.
