Ministry of Transportation and Transit officials were expected to offer an update Thursday afternoon on the status of Westside Rd. on the Westside following Tuesday night’s big landslide.

On Wednesday they said once assessments were done on the 50-metre by 2-metre deep slide site and the area was confirmed safe, crews could begin clearing debris. Only then would they have a better idea of a timeline for repairs and reopening.

Westside Rd North between Main St. and Denison Rd is closed.Traffic has been rerouted via Hwy97 through Vernon and Kelowna since the incident.

Meanwhile, a social media post from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR), gave a good indication of the ground conditions that crews may be facing for clean up.

COSAR reported they’d spent the day Wednesday looking through a former homeless camp for potential survivors of the mudslide.
