Former Olympians to help launch Youth Water Polo in Vernon

Local youth will have the opportunity to try out a different water-based sport in Vernon.

The relatively newly-formed Vernon Water Polo Club will be expanding the sport to younger athletes by creating a youth program.

Water Polo Canada has made note of this expansion and will visit Vernon on April 5 and 6 to help launch it, aided by former Olympic athletes who will run skills development workshops during those days.

“We’re thrilled to have Water Polo Canada supporting our program,” club Board Member and volunteer coach, Jocelyn Bell, said.

“Their involvement will help solidify our foundation and inspire more young athletes to give water polo a try.”

The Vernon Water Polo Club formed this past January and has already seen significant growth.

“This first season has been an incredible journey,” Club President, Sarah Lauman, said.

“We’ve seen adults return to the pool after years away from the sport and a handful of adults new to the sport. There has been much development in our players, from learning the fundamentals to building confidence in the water. The energy and excitement around the sport here in Vernon is growing.”

Looking ahead to the spring season, which begins April 27, Lauman encouraged anyone interested in trying out the sport to “come out and see what water polo is all about.”
