Lumby second degree murder case going straight to trial

Mar 26, 2025 | 10:54 AM

The accused in a second degree murder case will be heading to trial.

The case against Vitali Stefanski, charged in the death of his ex-wife, Tatjana Stefanksi, was due to proceed with a preliminary inquiry between March 31 and April 3.

However, the B.C. Prosecution Service said the Crown decided to proceed with a direct indictment, meaning the case will go to trial in supreme court without a preliminary inquiry in provincial court.

The matter was adjourned to April 7, when a process hearing will be held at the Vernon courthouse. The Prosecution Service noted this hearing could be held at an earlier date if the defence is available sooner.

The trial dates will be determined at a future court appearance.

Tatjana Stefanski went missing from her home in Lumby in April of 2024, and her body was discovered in a rural area the following day.

Vitali Stefanski was located in a nearby area that same day and arrested, then later charged with her death.
