Former Vernon councillor to run in next federal election

Scott Anderson has officially made his foray into federal politics.

The businessman and former Vernon city councillor was elected as the Conservative Party of Canada candidate for the new Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee riding Sunday, March 16.

“Thank you so much to all the constituents of the riding of Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee for putting your trust in me to be your Conservative Party of Canada candidate in the upcoming federal election,” Anderson said in a social media post.

“I am deeply honoured to be representing you, and I vow to work hard to become our next MP.”

Speaking with Vernon Matters, Anderson said he couldn’t disclose the vote result, but did say “it was a substantial win.”

He went on to say the nomination vote process was smooth.

“When I ran in 2015 there were signs everywhere and the candidates were standing around hobnobbing and whatnot. This was run very much like Elections Canada, which I’m pleased about,” Anderson said.

“We basically gave our speeches, then we went to the front of the line and cast our votes, and were required to leave the building like everybody else. So it was just like a provincial or a federal election, very formal, security very tight. It was just very well run.”

The seat in the new riding will be created when the next federal election is called.

Anderson said that could occur as early as within a month and, if elected, he wanted people to know that he would be serving everyone in the riding, not just the Conservative constituents.

As of March 17, the other declared candidates for the Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee riding were Blair Visscher (Green Party of Canada) and Arsh Dhillon (People’s Party of Canada). The federal Liberals and NDP had not announced their local candidates as of time of publication.
