Contract for Vernon Creek naturalization being finalized, park bridge and trails reopened

Phase 2 of the Vernon Creek Naturalization project at Polson park will move ahead in the summer.

A report to Vernon City Council stated the construction contract, which was originally included as option work as part of the first phase, was being finalized.

The report stated the work that would see the creek’s natural habitat restored, while also reducing future flood risk, should go from July through September, as that is the window when work is allowed under regulations by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. However, it was noted there could be tree and vegetation removal starting as early as March.

Efforts would be made to reduce the project’s impact on the park, including installing temporary fencing, restricting vehicle access, and coordinating with user groups to move events to alternative locations.

Additionally, the report stated the contractor had completed the concrete deck over the pedestrian bridge spanning the creek in Polson Park.

That bridge, along with trails along the creek, were open to the public as of Friday, March 7.

The report will be presented to Vernon City Council as information at the regular meeting Monday, March 10.
