Coldstream to seek grant for Lavington Wetland flood mitigation project

Feb 13, 2025 | 1:51 PM

The District of Coldstream will apply for some outside funding to support a water quality and flood mitigation initiative.

At the regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 10, Coldstream Council directed staff to apply for funding from the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) for a water conservation and quality improvement project at the Lavington Wetland.

A report to council said the grant could support the Lavington Wetland Risk Mitigation Plan, which was developed to mitigate the impacts of flood events, such as the one that occurred in 2018 and caused the Coldstream Creek to leave its bed and create a new channel, impacting the treatment capabilities of the wetland.

The report added the treatment system was needed to reduce nutrient loads in Coldstream Creek and Kalamalka Lake, adding the nutrients were known to lead to water quality issues, including the growth of toxic blue-green algae.

Council voted in favour of having staff apply for a grant from the OBWB, and agreed to write a letter of support to go along with the application. The amount requested was not disclosed.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Council voted in favour of directing staff to apply for a grant from the Union of B.C. Municipalities for Emergency Operations Centre equipment and training.

The District will seek $40,000 to fund the local Emergency Operations Centre staff training and the purchase of necessary equipment so Coldstream could be prepared in the event of an emergency.
