The body of an 18-year-old man who fell through the ice on Shuswap Lake has been recovered.

Police reported the man missing just after 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, after going through the ice between the Raven subdivision and Sandy point in Salmon Arm.

Salmon Arm RCMP, Salmon Arm Search and Rescue, the Salmon Arm Fire Department, and B.C. Emergency Health Services immediately responded and started the search for the man. The RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team was later called in to help search the lake.

RCMP said the extensive search from the dive team and Search and Rescue led to the deceased man being located in the late afternoon Monday, Feb. 10.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected the family, first responders, and the community,” Sgt. Simon Scott, Salmon Arm RCMP’s Detachment Commander, said.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the young man during this incredibly difficult time.”

RCMP urged people stay off frozen lakes, saying though the ice could appear stable it could quickly become hazardous and pose a dangerous risk.

“Our officers and Search and Rescue partners have witnessed the dangers firsthand, and we cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding frozen bodies of water,” Scott added.

“We urge everyone to take extreme caution and prioritize safety to prevent another tragedy.”

Police said no more information about the case would be released.
