Kelowna RCMP report increase in youth related incidents

Feb 11, 2025 | 4:47 PM

Kelowna RCMP have reported an increase in youth related incidents over the past several weeks.

Mounties say the incidents included fights, unlawful consumption of alcohol and drugs, and social disorder.

The increase was linked most notably to Friday and Saturday evenings, particularly in the downtown core or around the Orchard Park Mall.

“Our Community Youth Safety Officers have been working collaboratively with the School District to information share and develop the necessary messaging to identified youth and their parents,” Inspector Jason Charney of the Kelowna RCMP, said.

“We are also working with other partner agencies to identify the root cause of some of these issues, including increased access to youth programs, resources and enhanced outreach efforts.”

In response to the increase in youth related incidents, police have increased patrols in areas where youth tend to gather so the officers can engage with them, address any of their concerns, and intervene when necessary.

“While we strive to build relationships with our youth and provide the safest environment for all members of our community, these are the types of incidents we simply have zero tolerance for and are making this very clear,” Charney noted.

Kelowna RCMP asked parents, grandparents and guardians speak to youth about responsible behaviour in public spaces and the potential consequences they could face for breaking the law or being part of disruptive activities.

Police also encouraged the community to report any incidents of concern to the non-emergency line at 250-762-3300.
