The province oversaw the planting of more than a quarter of a billion trees over the year.

Through the B.C. Government’s reforestation efforts, more than 280-million trees were planted throughout the province in 2024.

There were 13 different species of native trees chosen for the replanting efforts in order to preserve natural ecosystems and prioritize key characteristics, such as resilience to climate change.

“2024 was a banner year for tree planting in B.C., including celebrating 10 billion trees planted since 1930,” Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests, said.

“Our government’s commitment to sustainable forests has seen us lead the country by planting more than two billion trees since 2017.”

Tree-planting was primarily focused to areas damaged by forest fires, though trees were also planted in areas where forest tenure holders have legal requirements to regenerate harvested areas.

“We are in good shape right now based upon a run of strong years and the government’s commitment to tackling the impacts of climate change through adaptation and keeping reforestation programs at a level to help regrow our forests,” John Betts, executive director, Western Forestry Contractors’ Association, said.

“Our members have been adapting to the concept of a restoration economy targeting ecosystem resilience through all kinds of different planting programs.”

The B.C. Government has run reforestation programs since 1930.

B.C. Timber Sales, a division of the Ministry of Forests, also marked a milestone in 2024. The agency has planted over a billion trees since it was established since it was founded in 2003.
