Waste Diversion Tips

City of Vernon recommends recycling, composting over holidays

Dec 19, 2024 | 4:25 PM

The City of Vernon has tips for residents to help them cut down waste over the holiday season.

Vernonites were encouraged to help cut down on their household waste going to the landfill by first diverting organic waste and recycling.

The green-lidded organics carts can be used for food scraps and other compostable materials, such as soiled napkins and paper towels.

Many materials can also be recycled, including non-foil wrapping paper, gift boxes, beverage containers, cardboard, glass, and certain plastics.

The city reminded the public that batteries should not go in the trash or the recycling bins, but instead disposed of at local recycling depots.

Christmas trees will not be accepted in organic carts, but can be disposed of at the Marshall Field parking lot between Dec. 27 and Jan. 18, where they will be chipped and used for compost.

Ribbons, bows and plastic gift wrapping won’t be accepted in recycling carts and must go in the garbage.
