City of Vernon urges caution with changing road conditions

Dec 17, 2024 | 10:38 AM

Winter weather has arrived, and the City of Vernon is reminding motorists to drive to conditions.

City crews were dispatched early Tuesday, Dec. 17, to address slick road conditions caused by overnight rain and snow, and early morning freezing temperatures.

The city said sanding and salting would continue Tuesday as required.

As the roads may remain wet and slick, and the weather poses a risk of further snow or ice on the roads, the city advised motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to be cautious when moving through Vernon by allowing additional travel time, approaching intersections with caution, and be aware of other road users.

Anyone approaching an emergency scene while travelling were reminded to slow down and follow all traffic control measures.

The city added it will be prepared for future snow events, noting roads will cleared on a priority basis starting with main roads, bus routes, school zones and select problem areas. Crews will then move to all remaining roads, and finally to lanes and cul-de-sacs.

It may require up to 72 hours for crews to clear all roads in the city, and work will only be done once the snow stops falling.
