Fees Increasing for Most Material

RDNO’s disposal fees to increase in the new year

People disposing of waste in the region will see the fees and charges increase.

Effective January 1, 2025, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) will increase the diversion and disposal fees for a number of products.

• Refuse/garbage – increasing from $113 to $116 per tonne
• Construction and demolition waste – increasing from $270 to $286 per tonne
• Wood waste – increasing from $34 to $35 per tonne
• Refuse containing regulated material – increasing from $286 to $303 per tonne
• Drywall – increasing from $162 to $167 per tonne
• Asphalt roofing – increasing from $90 to $100 per tonne

Minimum charges of $10 will remain in place for up to 86 kilograms (190 pounds) of refuse, wood waste and scap metal until 2027.

Disposal of yard and garden waste, with the exception of tandem truck or larger loads, will continue to be accepted free of charge.

The RDNO stated the diversion and disposal fees increases will align with inflation and cover the facility operating costs and long-term capital costs, as the RDNO’s Solid Waste Management Service is funded almost entirely by fees, with a small portion coming through taxation.

The RDNO encourages people reduce their waste production through recycling and composting to limit the amount they contribute to the local landfills, as well aas the amount of fees they need to pay.
