Halloween Safety Tips

VFRS reminds people be seen and be safe this Halloween

The local fire department is reminding the public to take steps to be safe this All Hallow’s Eve.

With local kids ready to hit their streets and collect their Halloween candy, Vernon Fire Rescue Services emphasized the importance of being seen after dark.

“The number one thing to remember is to be visible,” Fire Chief David Lind said.

“Now that the sun is setting earlier, it’s important that kids’ costumes have some form of reflection on them so drivers see everyone crossing the road or walking from house to house.”

VFRS recommended trick-or-treaters and their parents and guardians stay visible by using flashlights or glow sticks, and wearing lighter coloured or reflective costumes and clothing.

VFRS also recommended people take steps to be safe when decorating, such as by using battery powered electric candles in Jack-o’-lanterns; ensuring exits are clear of decorations; that decorations are kept away from open flames and heat sources; and that smoke alarms are working.
