People looking housing options may soon have almost 100 new affordable units to access.

The Okanagan Village Housing Society has launched the new A Place to Call Home project, to open up more affordable housing at a property located at 6545 Okanagan Landing Road, next to Marshall Fields.

The project will be supported by an anonymous donor, who pledges to match up to $1 million in donations for the development of the property.

“We are incredibly grateful to our anonymous donor for their remarkable generosity,” said Margaret Penner, president of the Okanagan Village Housing Society (OVHS).

“Their support has been instrumental in allowing us to purchase the land where we can create a much-needed housing project, which will provide stability and opportunity for those in our community. This development is a vital step toward tackling the ongoing housing crisis in the Okanagan region.”

Cindy Masters, executive director of the OVHS, stated the preliminary funding will support the multi-family project consisting of 94 units, made up of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom suites. She added the property was also going through the Official Community Plan and rezoning processes as of time of publication.

The fundraising campaign was also being supported by a five-year donation committment by Okanagan Restoration Services Ltd.

“The need for affordable housing in Vernon has never been greater, and the Okanagan Village Housing Society is committed to being part of the solution,” Masters added.

“With the support of the community, our remarkable anonymous donor and today, Okanagan Restoration Services, we can ensure that more people have access to safe, comfortable housing for individuals and families.”

Donations to the A Place to Call Home campaign can be made through the OVHS website.
