Bridge in Sicamous to be replaced after fatal crash

Sep 4, 2024 | 1:46 PM

A bridge in Sicamous where one person died after a truck went through the railing and into the water will be replaced.

The B.C. Government said a $136 million contract has been awarded for the R.W. Bruhn Bridge replacement.

The province said the new bridge will improve traffic flow and include more safety features for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Work will begin in the coming fall.

The project will involve four-laning 1.9 kilometres of Highway 1, replacing the bridge with a new four-lane structure, and upgrading intersections between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road.

The project will also see the intersection at Old Spallumcheen Road and Highway 1 replaced with safer access that eliminated left turns, and a new multi-use path to provide pedestrians, cyclists, and other active transportation users with a safe path across the Sicamous Narrows and into the town.

The bridge was the scene of a fatal crash on August 24, which saw a semi-truck heading down the hill towards Sicamous strike the curb, cross the bridge deck, go through the railing and plunge into the Sicamous Narrows channel.
