Evacuation Alert lifted as Sitkum Creek fire held

Significant progress was made containing the wildfire northeast of Lumby and Cherryville over the weekend.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said the Sitkum Creek wildfire east of Sugar Lake was considered ‘Under Control’ as of Sunday, August 11.

The BCWS reclassified the fire stating it was likely to not spread beyond the current perimeter.

In response to the change in the fire status, the Regional District of North Okanagan lifted its Evacuation Alert for 1616, 1622, and 1630 Sugar Lake Road.

As of last update, the BCWS had 23 firefighting personnel and one helicopter assigned to the fire.

The Sitkum Creek wildfire burned an estimated 1,261.9 hectares since igniting on July 18. Lightning remained the suspected cause of the fire.
