Evacuation Alerts issued due to wildfire near Splatsin First Nation

The wildfire near Splatsin First Nation grew to 70 hectares in size Monday, Aug 5.

Splatsin, the Township of Spallumcheen, and Columbia Shuswap Regional District issued Evacuation Alerts due to the spreading Hullcar Mountain fire Monday.

Splatsin’s Evacuation Alert was in affect for the properties on Felix, Salmon River, Clcahl, Hullcar, and Williams Roads.

The Evacuation Alert in Spallumcheen also included properties on Hullcar Road, as well as all properties on Todd Placer and Frederick Road; 5193 Parkinson Road; and 5353, 5315, and 5233 Deep Creek Road.

The CSRD’s Evacuation Alert was issued fro properties on the west side of Deep Creek Road from 2232 to 2310; for 2839 Forbes Road; and for 2033 to 2621 Salmon River Road along with 2702, 2833, 2913, and 2964 Salmon River Road.

People in the affected areas are urged to have their grab-and-go bags ready so they can leave if conditions change and the Evacuation Alert is upgraded to an Order.

As of the latest update, the BCWS said there 25 personnel assigned to the fire, including were four initial attack crews, one rappel crew, and two wildfire officers.

There were also airtankers and bucketing helicopters, heavy equipment, and a structure protection specialist assigned to the fire.

A wildfire that sparked in the North Okanagan saw some growth over the past 24 hours.

The fire was discovered near the Splatsin First Nation near Armstrong and Enderby on August 4, and was estimated at one hectare in size by the end of the day.

However, the B.C. Wildfire Service reported the fire as having grown to 10 hectares as of 9:18 a.m. Monday, August 5.

The fire was being actioned by three initial attack crews on the ground, and two bucketing helicopters.

The BCWS said the fire was classified as Out of Control as of Monday morning, and was suspected of being caused by lightning.
