Okanagan College (OC) has a new faculty member who is bringing almost two decades of experience into the role.

The OC announced Patrena Mackie is the college’s new Dean of Health and Social Development.

Mackie, who holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Nursing, brings 17 years of experience in teaching and health care into her new position.

“I am honored to join Okanagan College and look forward to working with a dedicated team to create an inclusive, technologically advanced learning environment that supports all students,” Mackie said.

“I look forward to working together with the team at OC to encourage people in our region to consider the wide range of exciting health care programs available at the College, and in doing so, to pursue a rewarding career.”

Mackie previously worked for Bow Valley College where she was the Associate Dean of the School of Health and Wellness, Nursing portfolio. The OC noted Mackie focused on integrating technology into curriculum and improving learner experience and outcomes in her previous role.

“We are delighted to welcome Patrena Mackie to Okanagan College,” Samantha Lenci, OC’s Provost and Vice President Academic, said.

“Her extensive experience and innovative approach to education will be invaluable in advancing our mission to provide high-quality, accessible education to all. I am confident that under her leadership, the Health and Social Development department will continue to thrive and grow.”

Mackie will take over from Joanne Gibbons-Smyth, who has served as the Interim Dean of Health and Social Development since March.

“Joanne’s leadership and dedication during this transitional period have been greatly appreciated. Her efforts have ensured the continued success and stability of the department,” Lenci said.

Mackie will officially join OC on Sept. 9, 2024.
