Evacuation Alert issued for over a dozen properties near Sorrento

A wildfire in the Shuswap has led to an Evacuation Alert being put in place for several properties in Sorrento.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) issued the Alert for 14 properties within Electoral Area G at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, due to the potential risk from the wildfire burning the South Shore Place and Elson Road area, south of the CP Rail tracks.

People in the affected area are advised to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice by having their grab-and-go bags packed and ready, having emergency plans in place for getting family, friends and neighbours out of the area and having a designated meeting place, and arranging for accommodation options.

The CSRD noted the Shuswap Fire Department was on the scene and actioning the fire, with assistance from a B.C. Wildfire Service initial attack crew and response officer.

The wildfire was estimated at 90m2 as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The cause of the fire was unknown at the time.
