Evacuation Alert issued for Sugar Lake recreation area

People recreating in the North Okanagan near Cherryville are advised to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

The Regional District of North Okanagan issued an Evacuation Alert for the recreation area near Sugar Lake shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, July 22.

The Alert was issued at the 58 hectare Sitkum Creek wildfire east of the lake pose a potential danger to life and health should it spread.

Additionally, the Okanagan Shuswap Forest District implemented a road closure at the 2.5km mark of Kate Creek Fire Service Road in order to limit access to the area under the Evacuation Alert.

This Alert was the second issued by the RDNO within the past few days.

An Alert was issued Firday, July 19, in response to the Bonneau Creek wildfire burning east of Echo Lake. There were 24 properties, as well as the DVM Bible Camp, within that Alert, which remained in place Monday despite the wildfire being considered Under Control in case it flared up again.

People within Evacuation Alert zones are advised to have their grab-and-go bags stocked up and easily accessible, to have plans in place for family, friends and neighbours as to how to leave their homes and where to stay once evacuated, and to have plans for what to do with livestock.
