Vernon supports do-it-yourself air filter workshop

A workshop where people can assemble their own affordable air filters is being supported by the City of Vernon.

At the regular meeting Monday, July 15, Vernon City Council was asked to provide up to $1,500 in support of an event led by the Simon Fraser University and the Pacific Institute on Pathogens, Pandemics and Society.

The workshop will see participants build their own air filter system to catch particulate matter from wildfire smoke, airborne viruses, and allergens. The mechanism costs roughly $75 to build and is made in a way that the filter can be taken out and replaced. Participants will also receive a copy of the instructions at the event.

Council voted unanimously in favour of providing $1,500 for the workshop. The funding will come from the Local Government Climate Action Program fund.

The report to council said the workshop would be limited to 20 participants, but did not indicate where or when it would be held. Simon Fraser University did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Vernon Matters.

Similar workshops have been held in other B.C. communities recently including three in Kelowna this past June.
