Cool off in the Peanut Pool: Community celebration for new facility

Jul 9, 2024 | 5:00 AM

The City of Vernon’s newest water facility will officially be opened later this week.

The city will host a community celebration to mark the completion of the Lakeview Wading “Peanut” Pool on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

“The completion of the pool is a significant milestone for our community, and we are excited to invite you to join us for a day of fun and festivities,” a city news release stated. “The day of celebration will feature an early morning ribbon-cutting ceremony, family-friendly activities, games, music, refreshments, and opportunities to enjoy the newly completed pool and spray park.”

Date:Thursday, July 11, 2024
Time:1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Location:Lakeview Park 3001 18th Street

The pool took longer to construct than expected after starting in June 2022. The latest cost estimate from the city was $4.8 million. About $1.9 million of the cost came from a Canada-B.C. grant.

It replaces the original peanut-shaped pool in the park that opened in 1958.

More visitors to the park are expected that day, and parking will be limited.

“We encourage residents to consider alternative transportation options, such as walking, cycling or transit to help ease congestion” the release said.

As pool space is limited, users are asked users to be mindful of their time in the pool to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the facility.

Heat Safety
With hot temperatures in the forecast, residents and visitors are reminded to take steps to stay safe in the heat:

  • wear a hat,
  • drink water regularly even before you feel thirsty, and
  • regularly reapply sunscreen.
