Salmon Arm RCMP urge safety during boating season

Jul 5, 2024 | 11:55 AM

Police in the Shuswap are wanting people to make sure they are safe when out on the water.

Salmon Arm RCMP stated residents and visitors enjoying the lakes this summer should be taking steps to stay safe while boating, and have some key safety reminders.

  • Wear a life jacket: Always wear a Canadian-approved personal flotation device while on the water
  • Always boat sober: Do not mix alcohol, cannabis, prescription drugs, or other substances that can cause intoxication with boating
  • Prepare both yourself and the vessel: Ensure the boat has all the required safety gear and fuel, and check the weather before heading out on the water
  • Take a boating course: Boaters are required by law to possess a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in order to operate a motorized boat
  • Be aware of the dangers of cold-water immersion: Even though temperatures are rising, the water remains cold, which can severely impact a person’s ability to swim and stay afloat

“Salmon Arm RCMP recommend all boaters review your boat safety knowledge before getting back out on the water this season, and wish all boaters a safe summer season,” Constable Andrew Hodges of the Salmon Arm RCMP said.

Salmon Arm RCMP remind the public that officers will be patrolling the lake to ensure compliance with boating safety regulations, check that drivers are certified to operate boats, and make sure personal flotation devices are being used.
