The removal of unstable material above Highway 97 near Summerland is finished.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said it has completed the major blasting work along the slope where a landslide brought debris onto the highway between Summerland and Peachland in August of 2023.

More than 46,500 cubic material from the rockslide has been removed from the site, and crews will be transitioning to stabilizing the slope with rock bolting. The province noted smaller blasts may still be needed at the site.

With the major blasting complete, the construction zone area would be shortened, allowing four lane traffic at the south end from Callan Rd. to Summerland throughout the summer. Traffic will continue to be limited to one lane in each direction through the main work zone

The next phase of the project may still require some closures, but the province said stoppages of more than 20 minutes would be less frequent.

Drivers are reminded to be cautious of personnel and equipment when travelling through work zones, and to follow all construction zone speed limits and traffic control measures.
