Sicamous product among inductees to Hockey Hall of Fame

A hockey star who was born and raised in Sicamous is among the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

Shea Weber is one of seven inductees this year.

Weber started his hockey career with the KIJHL Sicamous Eagles in the 2000-01 and ’01-’02 seasons. He was then picked up by the Kelowna Rockets, and was part of the team that won the Memorial Cup in 2004.

In the 2005-06 season Weber turned pro, joining the Nashville Predators who drafted him in the second round, 49th overall in 2003.

The defenceman from the Shuswap played for the Preds for 11 seasons, six of which he served as the team’s captain, before being traded to the Montreal Canadians for the 2016-17 season.

He is currently under contract with the Utah Hockey Club on long-term injured reserve after suffering an injury while helping Montreal advance to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.

In international play, Weber was part of the Canadian teams that won gold at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

The now 38-year-old was also part of Canada’s World Junior Team in 2004, and part of the nation’s squad in the International Hockey World Championships in 2007 and 2009.

Along with Weber, the other Class of 2024 inductees are:

• Jeremy Roenick, who had 20 seasons under five NHL teams, as well as one Olympics appearance;
• Pavel Datsyuk, who played 14 seasons in the NHL and was part of the Russian team in five Olympic Games;
• Krissy Wendell-Pohl, who played internationally with Team USA from 1999 to 2007, during which she helped the United Stated earn its first ever gold medal.
• Natalie Darwitz, who played for the United States in three Olympic Games and eight world championships;
• Colin Campbell, who spent 25 years as senior executive vice president at the NHL’s Hockey Operations, Officiating, and Central Scouting departments;
• David Poile, who was an NHL executive from 1972 to 1997 before he moved to Nashville as General Manager, a role he held until 2023

The 2024 Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Toronto on November 11.
