An issue with a chemical solution in NÜTRL brand tumblers has led to a recall being issued.

Health Canada says the 877 mL (30 oz) NÜTRL brand tumbler cup that were distributed for free as a promotional gift with a purchase of a case of NÜTRL, including at participating liquor stores in Vernon and the Okanagan, may contain a chemical solution containing sulfuric and phosphoric acids trapped between the inner walls of the tumbler.

The solution may be released when the tumbler is filled, posing a risk of someone ingesting elevated levels of iron, chromium and nickel.

“A range of health effects has been associated with ingestion of these substances, including burning of the lips, tongue, throat, stomach, and/or other tissue damage, and nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea,” Health Canada warns.

“Health effects associated with skin contact with these substances include blistering, burns, pain, and redness.”

As of May 23, 2023, a total of 43 reports of consumers experiencing various symptoms had been reported to Sunscope, the company that manufactured the tumblers.

Health Canada advises people immediately stop using the recalled product, and contact Sedwick for more information by calling 1-866-846-1778 or by emailing nutrltumblerca@sedwick.com.

Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention.

Health Canada notes that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits people from redistributing, selling or giving away recalled products.
