Restaurant closed ‘indefinitely’ after damage from fire

UPDATE June 8, 2024

The Intermezzo Restaurant in Vernon is closed until further notice due to a fire in its building complex on Friday.

The business posted an update on social media.

“Intermezzo will be closed due to unforeseen circumstances,” the posting said. “Our building has smoke and water damage from a fire that started in a neighbouring business. The situation could have been much much worse. We are eternally thankful for the Vernon firefighters fast response and our staffs quick thinking to the emergency at hand.”

A restoration crew is making the repairs, but it’s unknown at this point when the eatery will reopen..

“We are closed downtown indefinitely but will be back open stronger as soon as we can. We thank you all for your continued loyalty, understanding and support during this difficult time,” the posting stated.

“Please let us know as soon as you reopen your doors so we can come and support the recovery!!,” one person commented on Facebook.

The restaurant’s castle bistro on Greenhow Road s open and their hostesses are doing their best to accommodate reservations.

Building evacuated as crews respond to smoke and fire in business complex
UPDATE: 4:45 p.m. June 7, 2024

Crews from all three of Vernon’s firehalls responded to an incident at a business complex in downtown Vernon Friday afternoon.

The first call came in around 2:50 p.m., a report of smoke inside the building housing the Intermezzo Restaurant, Centre Dry Cleaning and Total Pet on 34th Avenue.

“Upon arrival, fire fighters were able to confirm smoke coming from the roof a commercial building,” Josh Winquist, city communications officer told Vernon Matters.

“Employees of the businesses in the commercial building were evacuated, while crews investigated the cause of the smoke.”

Crews determined there was a small fire in the utility room in one business with smoke extending to the rest of the building and adjacent businesses.

“Thanks to the quick and effective response of the crews they were able to contain the fire from spreading. There is no further risk to the businesses or building,” Winquist added.

There were no reports of injuries.

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.

A heavy firefighter presence is still visible at a Vernon restaurant.

The fire department has blocked off 33rd Street near Intermezzo, where there was a report of smoke inside the building around 3 p.m. Friday.

The restaurant has been evacuated along with staff and patrons of Total Pet and Centre Dry Cleaning which are in the same complex.

There are no signs of flames or smoke from the outside of the building.

The City of Vernon says it will provide details when they are available.

Two fire engines responded to a report of a possible fire at a Vernon restaurant Friday afternoon.

The first dispatch went out just before 3 p.m., reporting smoke inside the Intermezzo restaurant at 3206 34th Avenue.

Vernon Matters was at the scene and noticed all of the staff was evacuated.

No flames were visible from the outside at that time, but the employees were saying there was smoke inside the building.

We have reached out to the City of Vernon for more details.
