Human remains found inside home destroyed by fire: RCMP

RCMP say it appears a house fire in Lumby claimed the life of one person.

Police were called to a fully-involved structure fire in the 2000 block of Mountain View Drive in Lumby around 2 a.m. on Monday, June 3.

The Lumby Fire Department was on the scene, with assistance from fire teams in BX-Swan Lake, Coldstream and Lavington.

After a number of hours, fire crews extinguished the blaze which completely destroyed the home.

Police have confirmed three occupants of the home made it out safely, but one person, who was inside the home at the time of the fire, remains unaccounted for.

Const. Chris Terleski, RCMP media relations officer, said the cause of the fire remains undetermined, but based on the early investigation, no criminality is suspected.

“An examination of the scene was completed and what are believed to be human remains were found inside the home,” the media officer stated

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the incident.

RCMP are investigating the cause of what may have been a fatal house fire in Lumby.

The Regional District of North Okanagan said the Lumby and District Fire Department, with help from the BX-Swan Lake, Lavington, and Coldstream departments, were called to a structure fire in the 2000 block of Mountain View Avenue around 2 a.m. Monday (June 3).

“Between the four responding fire departments, eighteen firefighters were on the scene, and after many hours the fire has been extinguished,” Stacey Raftus, communications officer with the RDNO, said.

Raftus said as of 4 p.m.. the RCMP were at the scene completing a site examination.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and the incident has been turned over to the RCMP for investigation,” Raftus added.

Police say while three people got out of the home, one person is unaccounted for.

The house was destroyed.
