Urban Deer Fawning

Public advised to give deer space during fawning season

May 31, 2024 | 3:50 PM

The provincial government is encouraging people give deer plenty of space to avoid conflicts during fawning season.

Fawning season occurs from mid-May until the end of June.

During this period, a dow may often leave the fawns alone for hours while she feeds, returning periodically through the day to nurse.

While alone, the fawns may appear to be orphaned and helpless, but the doe may be nearby and ready to protect its young so people are advised to stay clear of the animals. Moving a fawn may also reduce the likelihood of it being reunited with its mother, with the province adding it is illegal under the Wildlife Act to take possession of a wild animal.

The province stated that urban deer are more likely to come in conflict with dogs, but people could also be confronted by the animals. Anyone who comes across an aggressive deer is advised to avoid eye contact, speak softly and back away slowly.

If attacked by a deer, stay upright, cover your head with your arms, retreat and seek shelter.

The province reminds people not to feed deer, and to be cautious of the animals while driving.

Anyone who sees fawns that appear abandoned are advised not to touch the animal, but to report the deer to the Conservation Officer Service by calling the Report All Poachers and Polluters hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
