Composite Okanagan rowing crews reach podium in Delta Regatta

Crews from the Okanagan raced at the Delta Deas Scholastic Regatta this past weekend, and once again demonstrated that Interior is becoming a rowing force to be reckoned with.

About 271 crews from 13 clubs raced on a 1000 metre course, and several Okanagan athletes and teams brought home medals and top finishes.

A powerhouse quad of Okanagan women – Aida Mills and Heidi Miege from Shuswap, Vernon’s Amy Milne, and Kelowna’s Kiersten Bereska – rowed their hearts out to take gold in their category, demonstrating that regional rivalries can be put aside for a common goal (and a shiny medal), finishing at 3:50.78.

Mills and Miege further solidified their individual strengths with a bronze in the U19 women’s double sculls.

Mills also claimed gold in the U19 women’s single sculls, while Miege secured bronze in the same event’s B final. Milne, in the second overall race of her rowing career, earned bronze in the novice women’s single sculls.

The Masys brothers from Vernon, Jonas and Peter, continued to make their mark on the junior circuit. Jonas took gold in the U19 men’s single sculls, while Peter placed a respectable fourth in the U17 category.

The brothers, along with Gerrit Hickman and Ian VanBergeyk of Shuswap, secured silver in the U19 men’s quad sculls.

Vernon second year athletes Leo Middelkamp and Ryland Holmgren gained valuable experience in the novice men’s single and double sculls races, both advancing to the A final.

All these athletes are now preparing for BC Summer Games trials, where they hope to represent B.C. Interior.
