Motorcycle operator suffers serious injuries in highway crash

May 22, 2024 | 10:21 AM

RCMP have released details about a serious crash involving a motorcycle on Highway 97 south of Vernon last week.

Police say a northbound motorbike rear-ended another vehicle at a high rate of speed Thursday, May 16 at around 11 p.m., causing the bike operator to be ejected and resulting in life-threatening injuries.

“Earlier, the same motorcycle failed to stop for police for travelling in excess of 160 km per hour,” Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer, told Vernon Matters.

The highway was closed for several hours for the police investigation.

“The RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service attended the scene and is assisting with the ongoing investigation,” Terleski added.

Local police were ruled out as having contributed to the collision.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. opened an investigation into the collision to see if Kelowna RCMP played a role in the crash.

The police watchdog found no evidence of the police actions or inactions contributing to the collision, and has since closed the investigation.
