Ottawa considers using Vernon armoury site for housing

The federal government has introduced an idea to use the site of the Brigadier Murphy Armoury in Vernon for housing.

As part of this week’s federal budget, the Liberals said they are looking to divest 14 surplus National Defence properties in Canada that have the potential to be turned into homes.

The budget said the government will “partner with the housing sector to build homes on every possible site across the federal portfolio.” The plan is to lease the lands and retain ownership whenever possible.

The Vernon armoury on 29th Street, near Vernon Jubilee Hospital, was built in 1913.

“Built as part of a reform and expansion program by the Department of Militia and Defence, the Brigadier Murphy Armoury is associated with establishing a community-based training centre in Vernon. It also has a long association with its regiment, the British Columbia Dragoons,” a posting on Parks Canada’s website stated.

The armoury, which was a place where weapons and other military resources were stored, is a recognized federal heritage building due to its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental value.

The federal government is also looking at using former Canada Post sites in Canada for much-needed housing.
