Update: Fire on Coldstream property creates safety concerns

Apr 16, 2024 | 10:00 AM

Crews from Coldstream and Lavington battled a fully-engulfed structure fire off Matner Lane in Coldstream Monday afternoon

An out-building that was on fire was being used as a storage site for an old vehicle and propane tanks.

“Safety concerns for the crews were paramount due to the volatile contents and overhead power lines as well as a nearby storage fuel tank,” Fire chief Fiona Morgenthaler Code told Vernon Matters.

The fire was also close to a home but aggressive tactics by the crews prevented any damage to that.

“With the assistance of 24 firefighters on scene, the fire was extinguished and overhaul was performed to assure no hot spots,” Morgenthaler Code said.

The fire chief said the fire did not appear suspicious, with the cause under investigation.

Morgenthaler Code passed on thanks to BC Hydro, FortisBC, BC Ambulance Service, RCMP and the staff from the District of Coldstream who attended and assisted with water and bringing a bull dozer to assist with overhaul.

Matner Lane is on the west side of Aberdeen Road.

There were big plumes of smoke coming from what appeared to be a farming property in Coldstream Monday afternoon.

A number of trucks and firefighters from the Coldstream Fire Department responded to the blaze just before 5:30 p.m. which appeared to be in the area of Venables Drive and Matner Lane, west of Aberdeen Road.

It was windy at the time, but it appeared crews were making progress on bringing it under control.

The firefighting was still going on at the time of publication.

It’s not known what was on fire.

Vernon Matters has reached out to the fire department for more details.
