RCMP will be using all terrain vehicles (ATVs) to increase the police presence and conduct safety patrols on the Okanagan Rail Trail in Kelowna.

The trained officers will be using the ATVs to get to areas on the trail that are difficult to access using normal police vehicles.

The patrolling officers will be looking for any criminal activity, but as well fire risks and any environmental damage that may have been caused by people camping illegally, or not in designated areas.

Sgt. Scott Powrie of the Community Safety Unit said ATVs are highly maneuverable and able to travel the roughest terrain, giving police the versatility to get into areas quickly and conduct the enforcement

“ATVs are cost-effective and can be used in a variety of settings, from assisting Search and Rescue to proactive patrol operations. Our officers are provided specialized ATV training giving them the skills and riding techniques necessary for law enforcement and any other tasks asked of us,” Powrie said.

Powrie said the community can expect to see CSU officers patrolling in vehicles, on foot, on bikes and now ATVs throughout the summer.

“In addition to the rail trail, CSU will be focusing their patrols in the downtown core, Rutland community, city parks and beaches,” Powrie added.
