Apr 14, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The Merritt Centennials’ 51-year tenure in the junior A B.C. Hockey League came to an end on Saturday (April 13) at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Cole Cooksey had two goals for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in a 4-1 win over the Cents, helping the club secure a 4-2 victory in the Round 1 post-season series.

The Centennials have ceased operation in the BCHL.

A new Merritt franchise will begin play next season in the junior A tier 2 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

Jaxson Murray claimed a piece of history on Saturday, becoming the final goal scorer in the now-defunct Merritt franchise’s history.

He tallied in support of goaltender Andrew Ballantyne, who stopped 14 shots in a losing effort.
