Excessive Use of Force

Charges recommended against two Vernon police officers

Apr 11, 2024 | 9:30 AM

Two members of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP could be facing charges stemming from an incident nearly three years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) was tasked with investigating an arrest that took place at approximately 2:40 p.m. June 30, 2021, as in the 2800-block of 28 Street in Vernon.

A man reportedly sustained serious injuries while being taken into custody, and needed to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Upon reviewing the case, the IIO’s Chief Civilian Director determined there were reasonable grounds to believe the two officers involved committed offences in relation to the use of force during the arrest.

The IIO has filed a report to the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of unspecified charges.

“In order to approve any charges, the BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, and that prosecution be required in the public interest,” the IIO stated in a news release.

The names of the officers have not been released.
