A plume of smoke that caused concern of a wildfire burning in Greater Vernon is the result of a permitted prescribed burn.

Following at least three reports from the public of smoke seen in the area near Ellison Park and Sparkling Hills Resort Monday afternoon, Vernon Fire Rescue dispatched crews to the area.

VFRS, through the City of Vernon, later told Vernon Matters it was not a wildfire and not a concern.

The smoke was still visible in the area Tuesday, April 2, and the City of Vernon confirmed with Vernon Matters that it is the result of a property owner conducting controlled burns under an approved permit.

The city thanked residents for reporting the smoke, and reminds people that smoke and fire seen within Vernon should be reported to 911, and those outside city limits should be reported to the B.C. Wildfire Service toll-free at 1-800-622-555 or by dialing *5555 on a cellphone.
