2023-24 Ski Season

SilverStar ski season coming to an end Sunday

Apr 1, 2024 | 2:57 PM

Skiers and snowboarders have just a few more days to hit the slopes.

Megan Sutherland, SilverStar Mountain Resort’s Communication and Public Relations Specialist, said the closing date for the ski hill is set this weekend.

“Our final day is April 7, so this coming Sunday will be the final day of the season for us,” Sutherland told Vernon Matters Monday, April 1, noting SilverStar had a lot of happy visitors this winter.

“We’ve had really good feedback from our guests and they give us really honest feedback which we take into consideration, and we’ve had a lot of really positive comments about the skiing and riding and the snow conditions as well still being really awesome.”

The local mountain, like most other ski resorts in B.C., did face some challenges over the winter with a late start to the season and some cold weather closures, though Sutherland said SilverStar was still able to provide some good conditions for winter recreators.

“There were some complications along the way. We had that really cold snap where we got down to the -30s in mid-January and had to close a number of lifts on the mountain just for everyone’s safety, both staff and guests,” Sutherland said.

“But we did have some really good snow days as well. We had a couple of really good powder days in January and February, we had a little bit of snow as well this last week, which has been awesome to be able to hold us on to the end of the season.”

As of Monday, April 1, the snow base at SilverStar was 171 centimeters, with Sutherland saying the ski resort received over 500 centimeters of snow over the winter.

“Overall, compared to some other resorts, we’ve been really lucky,” Sutherland told Vernon Matters.

“We’ve had the majority of our terrain open for the entire season. The back side is still open at this moment as well. [March 31st] was the last day that Silver Woods was open, so it’s been really good overall.”

SilverStar wrapping up season with 10 day festival

To celebrate the end of the ski season, SilverStar launched its Seismic Festival Friday, March 29.

The festivities kicked off with the Timber Tour BC Championships slope style, mogul and big air competitions held at SilverStar Friday, Saturday and Sunday, along with a beer garden and live music up the hill.

It was also Retro Day Saturday and an Easter Egg Hunt was held Sunday.

“For the rest of the week, right up to the last day, we’ve got free live music happening throughout the week,” Sutherland told Vernon Matters.

“This coming weekend we have our Spring Queening, so we’re moving all of our park features over to Spring Queen and that includes a brand new monster rail, a 90 foot monster rail that our team is building. We’ll have a pop-up challenge [in the terrain park] throughout the weekend as well. We’re really encouraging people to come on up and try it out, there will be crash prizes for clearing the monster rail.”

There will also be a box-zilla challenge in the terrain park over the last weekend of the ski season, as well as the Sovereign2SilverStar race.

The last day of operations will be Hawaiian Shirt Day, and a barbeque lunch will be provided to season pass holders.

The full Seismic Festival schedule can be found here.

After the ski hill closes, SilverStar will be preparing for the mountain bike season, which is expected to begin June 21st.
